ACTing English

From April 2017, we are offering short courses to speakers of other languages designed for those with an interest (professional or otherwise) in acting, theatre, drama and the performing arts, who wish to improve their English through learning acting skills. The course will also suit those who wish to enhance their communication and presentation skills in English within a business or educational environment.

The course is designed for non-native speakers of English and offers a combination of practical drama training and English language tuition. Courses are one week long, Monday to Friday 9.30am to 5.30pm and include classes in English language, voice, movement, text and improvisation. Students will develop their skills by working on a variety of different dramatic material from Shakespeare to contemporary playwrights.

The language sessions focus on speaking and listening skills as well as developing vocabulary and pronunciation. Improvisation and Devising will help to develop interactive skills as well as spontaneity. All classes are taught by ACT team members so students can experience UK based drama training and practice. The week will culminate in a script in hand performance in our Lantern Theatre. The week includes a trip to a local Theatre as well as other evening social events in and around Brighton.

The course cost includes tuition and the Theatre trip. The course fee does not include travel, accommodation, food or other social events. We can provide a local accommodation list and discounts to some local restaurants & cafes.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be over 18 years old. We will accept applications from students 16-18 with written parental approval. Previous drama experience is useful but not necessary and there is no upper age limit.

All of ACT's courses are taught in English and are practical and active. We require an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) overall band of 6.0 or if below this extensive previous drama or theatre experience.
